Oil on Canvas
Signed LR Walter Douglas
Width 8″ x Height 6″
Walter Douglas (1868 – 1948) American
Circa 1895

Commentary: A native of Cincinnati, Walter Douglas appears to have lived and painted primarily in New York and Rhode Island. He was a student of William Merritt Chase and a member of the National Academy of Design. Exhibition records at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art indicate that he exhibited regularly between 1895 and 1904. While the style of this painting is very much in the tradition of Peto, Harnett and other late 19th century American still life specialist, it is not tromp loeil but belongs to the broader, reflective tradition of still life composition.

Condition: The painting survives in excellent condition. It is unlined and appears to be on its original stretcher and in its original frame which retains an identifying label.
