Rebecca Wallace (1819-1893)
Needlework Sampler
Lexington, Rockbridge County, Virginia
Silk on linen
1832
19.5″ x 16.75″
A rare southern sampler from Rockbridge County, Virginia worked by Rebecca Jane Wallace in the year 1832 when she was 13 years old. She preserved her sewing needle and a bit of embroidery thread just above her name in this sampler, along with sets of the alphabet, a verse from a poem by Isaac Watts (1674-1748) and bounded the work with Quaker style floral motifs.
The sampler is accompanied by a miniature portrait of Rebecca, a letter from her brother while in Texas concerning his involvement in the war with Mexico, and a book of prose belonging to her husband, Marvin Sehorn (1817-1901) which includes their wedding announcement.
