Walnut Side Chairs
Set of Six
Probably Virginia
Circa 1790

Our set of six walnut side chairs represent a regional variation of a form found in both Virginia and on Long Island.  Based on English prototypes, the backs of chairs found in both locales most commonly feature five vertical bars plus the stiles.   This set, which have a history in Southside Virginia, have four evenly placed verticals bordered by the stiles.  Related examples also have Piedmont Virginia histories. The secondary wood in the slip seats is poplar.   The seat blocks are old replacements and, based on the witness marks indicating large triangular blocks now removed, are probably the third generation.  Overall condition is very good with the normal scattered repairs and losses commensurate with age and use.  A very usable and desirable set of six, very likely Virginia, side chairs.
