The decorative details and construction of this chest of drawers align it with a shop or network of cabinetmaking shops in the Winchester area. The shaped skirt and vertical foot profiles, and the  framed and glue-blocked base construction are characteristic of this group which includes, among others, a desk on frame catalogued by MESDA (file NN-1941), a linen press, chest of drawers in a private collection, a child’s chest of drawers (Sold by Jeffrey Evans 11/16/13, Lot #614 and an associated chest, lot #615) and a small spice/valuables chest in a private collection and the Houston family desk at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. Each has a strong Winchester history, identical moldings and scratchbeading, distinctive fine dovetailing and framed base construction with heavy blocking.

The chest descended in the Chester Buckwalter family of Frederick County VA.
