Benedict Calvert Milburn (1805-1867) was born in St. Mary’s County, Maryland down the Potomac River from Alexandria. He probably worked with John Swann at the Wilkes Street pottery in Alexandria until Swann’s insolvency. By 1833 he was certainly working for the stoneware manufacturer Hugh Smith and purchased the Wilkes Street pottery himself in 1841. Slip glazed decoration such as seen on this jar, appeared in Alexandria pieces around 1850 according to Wilder. Milburn’s sons continued the business after his death, until 1876.
