Battle of New Orleans
Aquatint, Etching & Line Engraving
Hand Color
Laid Paper
After William Edward West
J. Yeager, Philadelphia, Publisher
Second State
1817

This bold, hand colored engraving of The Battle of New Orleans which took place on January 8, 1815, is an important and striking historical record of a turning point in American history. In the lower center of the print is one of the earlier portraits of Andrew Jackson who is flanked by American flags.

One of the first American attempts to capture the victory graphically, the print was engraved by Joseph Yeager (ca. 1792 – 1859) of Philadelphia after an unlocated painting or drawing by William Edward West. Our example, the second state, is easily distinguishable from the first with General Lambert now shown weeping into a handkerchief and the address changed to 103 Race Street. Additionally, multiple British casualties have been added leaving no doubt as to the magnitude of the American victory. Yeager has also added an alphabetical key below the image that identifies the major figures.

The condition is excellent and the gum Arabic coloration is vivid.
