Country Scene with Stagecoach & Inn
Oil on Canvas
American
Unknown artist
C. 1850
32” x 45” Overall

From a Wythe County, Virginia collection, this pleasing landscape depicts a stagecoach rapidly crossing a bridge as it approaches a small village.  Its destination appears to be a creekside field stone inn at the edge of a mountain village. The  architecture of the main buildings and in particular the outbuildings suggest the scene depicted lay along the western edges of the Virginia or North Carolina Piedmont at the mountains’ edge.
