Side Chair

Bermuda
Red Cedar (Juniperus bermudiana)
Circa 1790
39 7/8” H x 21” W x 16 ¾” D

The style and red cedar identify this handsome side chair’s origins in Bermuda. This tree is native to the island and was the predominate cabinet wood until the introduction of mahogany.  Red cedar is strong, does not warp and is easily worked making it an excellent cabinet wood.   The quatrefoil incorporated into the back splat is found frequently in chairs made in Bermuda as are the elongated lozenges and rolled ears.  The seat frame is original with restored woven bast covering.
