Object: Cherry Inlaid Tall Chest of Drawers
Dimensions: Overall at extremes: 65” tall x 46 “ wide x 24” deep
Maker: Unknown
Location: Western Maryland or Southeastern Pennsylvania
Date: c. 1790

Commentary: The fine, mellow old finish is striking confirmation of the cabinetmakers choice of cherry for this classic tall chest. The wood has gradually darkened as has the extensive three part, cut-corner string inlay on each drawer face. Early, possibly original brasses and strong upward lift of the stylish “French” feet contribute to the chest’s outstanding overall presence.

Full dust boards of white cedar suggest an origin near the coastal plain in the area between Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Condition: The chest is in excellent condition with only minor repairs to the cock beading and one drawer corner. At least one of the foot posts has been replaced and there is evidence of some repair/rebuilding and re-nailing to the feet, facings and blocking. This work, along with minor repairs to the drawer runners, was likely undertaken concurrently with the old refinishing, probably in the late 19th century.
