Early Painted Blanket Chest
Eastern Tidewater, Virginia
Yellow Pine Primary with Atlantic White Cedar Drawer Bottoms
Original Bun Feet
Original Painted Surface
Circa 1740-1750

This very early Virginia chest survives in a remarkable state of preservation, The feet, snipe hinges, sliding drawer locks, till with hidden drawer and large areas of the surface are original and date the chest to the first half of the 18th century.  Conservator Peter Deen removed a coat of modern green paint to reveal the largely intact though oxidized original painted surface, now with a dark green cast.  MESDA recorded a very similar chest, D-33456, with no paint surviving, that is very likely from the same shop.
