Sewing or Work Table
Walnut
Virginia
Circa 1815
26” tall x 18.25” wide

In an age when a woman’s proficiency with her needle was an important measure of her domestic skills, a table suited specifically for her work projects was a useful and attractive furnishing. This Sewing Table is octagonal with four drawers and revolves on a nicely turned pedestal base.  The table has a single board, crotch grain walnut top and dates to the first decades of the 19th century.  The simple column turnings and plain cabriole legs relate to other piedmont Virginia stands and support its attribution to Albemarle County where is was found.  Yellow pine secondary wood.  Old repairs to the base and period appropriate replacement pulls.
