Commentary: A native of Amsterdam, Jan van Essen, established an independent studio at the age of twenty. He was advised by a well known dealer to focus his attention and talents on landscapes and achieved significant success in this specialty. Van Essen painted picturesque street scenes that sold well but eventually became enamored with the challenge of painting animals. His works are held in a number of major collections including that of the Queen of Holland, according to Dutch Painters of the Nineteenth Century.
