Catherine Yuille (1818-1881)
Caswell County, North Carolina
Silk on linen
1832
20” W x 23” H – overall

Born in Scotland, Catherine came to the United States in the late 1820s and was in Milton, North Carolina by 1831. In that year her father took a position at Milton Academy where she worked this sampler the following year. Her parents initials (larger) and her siblings are worked into the sampler on each side of the verse. Her use of Scottish style embellished lettering is especially noteworthy. The family relocated to Mobile in 1834.

Milton Female Academy opened in 1820 and was soon followed by the Milton Male Academy. The school’s first superintendent was Reverend Abner W. Clopton, a graduate of the University of North Carolina and a highly respected Baptist minister.

A rare southern sampler documenting work at a significant institution that survives in pristine condition. Recorded by MESDA as D-33233.
