Signed and dated “E.W. Hall/76” in lower right
Circa 1860
Oil on canvas, original frame
26.5 x 36.5

Elijah Hall joined the Raritan Bay Union, a utopian community in Perth Amboy from 1853-1860. A progressive school was founded on the site and Hall became the art instructor there until 1888. Artists John Sartain and George Inness lived on the campus for extended stays. A very fine depiction of haymakers gathering hay in a meadow with trees and a farmhouse in the distance.
