Dressing Table
Walnut
Philadelphia
Descended in the Montgomery/Lewis Families, Philadelphia, Ex Philip Bradley.
Circa 1750-1760
34″ W. (Case 30.25″) 30″ H. 21″ D

This handsome dressing table belongs to a group of high chests and tables characterized by the same front skirt and, in several instances, a scalloped backboard.  It descended in the Montgomery and Lewis Families of Philadelphia as documented by a note glued into a drawer, until sold at auction  and  subsequently acquired by the Philip H. Bradley Co,   Frances Montgomery Lewis (born 1780) was the daughter of Hester Griffitts and Capt. James Montgomery, who were married in Philadelphia in 1777.  Frances Montgomery married Joseph Saunders Lewis in 1800.   The dressing table is in excellent overall condition and retains its original brasses (excepting a single replacement).  Secondary woods are poplar and white cedar.   The combination of the  distinctive carved “stocking feett” , well developed skirt, excellent proportions and family history make this an unusually desirable example of a characteristic Philadelphia form.
