The combination of generous height, linear form and restrained decorative features of this sideboard are frequently referred to as a hunt board.  The line inlay and quarter fans as well as the simple practical configuration are characteristic of examples from the Virginia piedmont region where the neat and plain was favored for generations. The conservative, practical nature of the tidewater and piedmont regions of Virginia beyond the few urban centers was reflected in the continuation of traditional forms characterized by sturdy, simple construction with few superfluous embellishments.
