This very early stoneware jar is attributed to John Swann one of the founders of the pottery industry in Alexandria.  Swann apprenticed with Jonathan Scholfield at the Wilkes St. pothouse before purchasing the operation in 1813.  After his business failed, Swann continued to pot for Alexandria merchant Hugh Smith who invested in the manufactory.

Chip on rim, and small base chips.
